Frequently Asked Questions
What happens during treatment?
At your first session, your practitioner will ask you about every aspect of your health. She will observe your pulse and tongue (important signs in Traditional Chinese Medicine).
If you decide together that acupuncture is the best method for you, she will then insert a number of needles (usually between 6 and 12). Modern acupuncture needles are extremely fine, so treatment is usually almost painless. You may feel a dull ache, a tingling, or some other sensations as the needle comes into contact with the Qi. The needles are usually left in for about 20 minutes before being taken out.
Acupressure sessions last from half an hour to one hour. It is usually carried out through a thin layer of clothing and without oils.
Treatment periods vary from a single session to several months. Your practitioner will be able to give you some idea of how long yours will last at your first consultation. At first, you will need to be seen once, or possibly twice a week, and as the treatment starts to take effect, the sessions can be spaced out more.
Is it safe?
The needles we use are sterile (the packet is opened in front of you) and disposable (they are thrown away after a single use), so there is no possibility of spreading infection. The practitioner is bound by the code of hygiene developed by the Department of Health.
